ERAS Headshots for Your Residency Application
Your ERAS headshots are one of the first things a program director sees on your application, often before a single line of your personal statement. A distorted crop, a busy background, or a file that fails MyERAS’s upload requirements can create doubt before your credentials are ever reviewed. At WASIO Faces, we photograph your ERAS headshot to the current AAMC specification and guarantee it uploads correctly the first time.

Why Medical Students Choose WASIO for ERAS Headshots
Most students don’t realize there’s a meaningful difference between general headshot photographers and those who specialize in the medical residency application photo.
We know the exact ERAS specifications and we deliver files ready for direct upload to MyERAS.
Hiring a professional photographer such as WASIO faces ensures compliance with ERAS specifications and eliminates the technical rejections that may delay your application.
Expression coaching for medical professionalism
As professional photographers, we provide guidance for posing and expressions. We help you project an intelligent expression – warm, approachable, composed – rather than the stiff passport photo look or a forced smile that may appear unappealing and dishonest. A warm approachable expression is encouraged for ERAS headshots.
Specialty-aware attire guidance:
Whether you’re applying to surgical residency programs (where traditional professional attire is expected) or family medicine, we advise on what works. Attire for ERAS headshots should be traditional business professional, avoiding loud patterns and bright colors. Wear a navy or charcoal suit jacket for the most polished result.
Next-day availability during peak ERAS season
From July through September, we offer extended hours, including evenings and weekends, so you can book around rotation schedules. Most students book during this window, and we’re ready for the demand.
What Is an ERAS Headshot, and Why It Matters
An ERAS headshot is the professional photo you upload through MyERAS as part of your residency application.
Program directors and coordinators use it throughout the review process, from initial screening through interview season, to recognize and identify you among hundreds of applicants.
It’s technically optional, but the overwhelming majority of applicants include one, and most program reviewers expect it.
Unlike a casual photo or a selfie, an ERAS headshot needs to do two things at once. It has to look professional, and it has to meet a specific technical format. Getting either one wrong (a poor crop, a distracting background, an oversized file) creates a preventable obstacle in an already competitive process.
A poor crop, a distracting background, or an oversized file creates a preventable obstacle in an already competitive process.
ERAS Photo Requirements We Guarantee
ERAS Headshot Dimensions and Size
The AAMC specifies a photo of 2.5 by 3.5 inches, portrait orientation.
Minimum resolution of 150 dpi.
We deliver every file at or above this specification so your photo stays sharp at full size, not just in the thumbnail view.
ERAS Photo File Format and File Size Limit
The current AAMC requirement is JPG/JPEG or PNG format, with a maximum file size of 150 KB.
This is confirmed directly from AAMC's own documentation. We format and compress every file to this exact limit before delivery, so you never have to guess whether your file will upload.
ERAS Photo Background and Attire
A plain, neutral background works best. White or light gray are the most common choices and keep the focus on your face; a plain darker background is acceptable if it stays distraction-free. Avoid bright or saturated colors in both background and clothing.
For attire, business professional is the standard most programs expect: a navy or charcoal suit jacket over a collared shirt or blouse in a solid color. Patterns and busy prints tend to distract and can look odd under studio lighting.
On the white coat question specifically: there's no official AAMC rule against wearing one, and plenty of applicants do so without issue. That said, most photographers and advisors who specialize in this photo recommend business attire as the safer default, since a white coat can occasionally read as premature if you're not yet an attending. We'll help you decide what fits your specialty and comfort level during your outfit consultation.
What Happens If Your Photo Gets Rejected
If a program's system ever flags your photo for a technical formatting issue, we reformat and redeliver at no additional charge. We also verify format, dimensions, and file size before every delivery, so this should never come up, but the guarantee stands either way.
ERAS Headshot Examples
Seeing the difference between a compliant, professional ERAS photo and a common mistake makes the requirements above easier to picture.
This section pairs a few example looks showing:
- A properly cropped, front-facing head-and-shoulders composition against a neutral background
- A common mistake to avoid: a casual crop, a busy or colored background, or visible motion blur
- Two acceptable attire options side by side (business professional and, where appropriate, white coat) so applicants can see both look clean and compliant

How It Works
What are the current ERAS photo requirements for 2026–2027?
The ERAS photo size requirements are: 2.5 x 3.5 inches at 150 dpi resolution, with a maximum file size of 150 KB. ERAS requires the headshot in JPEG or PNG format – as of the 2026–2027 cycle, the AAMC accepts both formats.
ERAS photos must be in color with a light background. Photos should be a frontal view of head and shoulders. The face should be centered with the head and shoulders clearly visible in the composition.
A light gray or white background increases application visibility.
We ensure every detail of your primary application photo is ERAS photo correct before delivery. The AAMC specifies that the headshot is optional for residency applications, but the vast majority of applicants include one, and many medical residency program reviewers expect it.
When should I schedule my ERAS headshot?
Book your ERAS photo session 6–8 weeks before the ERAS submission opens – ideally in June or July for the September deadline.
This gives you time for the retouching process and any retakes if needed. We offer same-day and expedited services during peak season, but early booking guarantees availability and reduces stress.
The average client books about two weeks before the ERAS deadline, but earlier is always better.
What should I wear for my ERAS headshot?
Professional attire is essential. We recommend a charcoal suit jacket or navy blazer with a collared shirt in a solid, muted color.
Avoid wearing a white coat, casual clothing, busy patterns, or environmental backgrounds on clothing.
Wear minimal jewelry and avoid low-cut clothing.
If you’re unsure about photo background color contrast with your outfit, avoid wearing all-white clothing against a light backdrop.
Our outfit consultation – included with every session – will help you choose based on your skin tone and the specialty you’re targeting. Men should include a tie. Facial hair should be neatly trimmed.
Do you guarantee ERAS compliance?
Yes – 100% compliance guarantee with all AAMC ERAS specifications.
If your medical ERAS application photo is rejected for any technical issue, we reformat and redeliver at no additional cost.
We also run every image through a spec checker before delivery to verify format, dimensions, resolution, and file size.
Our session fee covers everything needed for a compliant, professional result.
